AI Overview

AI Overview is Google's name for the AI-generated summary that appears at the top of certain search result pages. It synthesizes information from multiple cited sources and presents a direct answer above the traditional blue links. The feature began rolling out broadly in 2024 as Search Generative Experience (SGE) and was rebranded AI Overview in 2025. Bing has a similar feature, ChatGPT search has its own variant, and Perplexity built its entire interface around the pattern. For publishers, AI Overview is both opportunity and threat. Sites cited in AI Overviews receive a small visible attribution and a referral link, but click-through rates are dramatically lower than for traditional rankings — the user has already gotten an answer. Studies through 2025 showed a 30–60% drop in organic traffic on queries that triggered AI Overview, with the steepest drops on informational queries. Commercial queries are less affected. For AI builders and content producers, optimizing for AI Overview citation is a new SEO subdiscipline. Practitioners call it Generative Engine Optimization or GEO. The patterns that surface in AI Overview citations include direct answer-style content near the top of the page, structured data (FAQPage, HowTo, Article schema), declarative factual statements with attribution, and well-formatted lists. The optimization target is no longer "rank #1" but "be the source the AI cites."
